Research Paper- Rationale

November 15, 2006

1. My argument for my essay will be that though the modern beauty products endorse enhancing natural beauty, it still features flawless models like back in the days and still leads for young women wanting to strive for perfection. My paper will highlight the history of advertising in the make up industry and see how the technique of advertising them changes throughout time. I will also try and analyze the correlation between these flawless women being featured on women and the self esteem of young women (if i can find the research that has been done).

2. I expect to discover that make up companies constantly try to reach out to their target audience based on my research thus far. Whether it be using a beautiful model to boost up their sales or some role model, they know that the spokesperson plays a vital part in advertising make up.
3.

this website gives a good background history of what the company has done so far. I do realize that wikipedia should not be too relied on. But I figured that by learning about names of models they have used, I will have keywords to search for when I do more research.  This website let me know about what queen latifah (a recent spokesmodel) has supposedly said about the brand “During the same interview Queen Latifah also stated that with her as the new face of CoverGirl it inspires women of color along with highlighting natural beauty.” which will fit perfectly in with the point that I want to make.

this website is perfect for me to find ads over different time periods which will help me support my argument and discover the different tactics used by the cosmetic industry over time as well.

4. What else do you need to do?  What elements of this paper are still not clear to you?

I still need to figure out if it is possible for me to find surveys/researches done about cosmetic ads and self esteem issues. I also feel like I need to figure out if I want to stick to the argument that I have. Because I feel like I also could go in the direction of talking about how they use their different spokesperson to appeal to mass media. However, if I did this, I would feel like I am not doing the historical aspect and therefore not fulfilling the assignment. That’s pretty much what’s unclear to me right now.

research projecttttttttt

November 1, 2006

for my research project i would like to research the history of advertisement in make up. i don’t know how specific we are supposed to be but if i can, i’d like to do either a brand that has been around for awhile and compare the difference in their ads or a specific product irregardless of its brand and compare how they are advertised. this is actually a very interesting topic to me becuause i use make up and i get very into brands, and i am very particular about the make up i use an d i know as bad as this sound, how products are advertised affects whether or not i buy make up very much. this would also be perfect becuase i read alot of fashion magazines/tabloids so i come across alot of current ads.
